Poland has an area of 120,728 square miles (312,684 square kilometers). It extends 403 miles (649 kilometers) from north to south and 428 miles (689 kilometers) from west to east. It is located in the east-central portion of Europe and is bordered on the east by Russia, Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine, on the west by Germany, on the south by the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and on the north by the Baltic Sea. Poland lacks strongly defined natural boundaries in the west and east, and its borders have changed many times in the past. The most extensive physical feature is the great plain that covers the northern two thirds of the country. It is part of the North European Plain, which extends from The Netherlands, through Germany and Poland, eastward toward Russia.
